Weber GENESIS Gas Grills: Breaking Backyard Barriers
Introducing Weber’s biggest grilling innovation in decades, the newly designed Weber GENESIS gas grill line. (Whew, it feels great to finally say that out loud. Do you know how long we had to keep this a secret from you guys?) Weber tested the new GENESIS grill design, concept, and prototype with more than 2,500 customers over hundreds of hours, all in service of creating the ultimate culinary experience in your backyard. No, seriously: these Weber GENESIS grills have upgraded features across the board, more usable space than their predecessors, and compatibility with Weber CRAFTED grillware for unmatched cooking versatility. In short, it’s everything you need to grill anything you’ve ever wanted, from start to finish, without leaving the backyard.
Before we go any further, we know what some of you might be thinking: “Wait, shouldn’t these be called ‘Genesis III?’” Our friends at Weber gave that a lot of thought before concluding that sequels are typically worse than the original thing — “The Godfather” film franchise aside; take that up with them if you disagree — which simply isn’t the case here. Indeed, the grills you see here surpass the Genesis II models in every way, earning them the right to be called “GENESIS” with no further description needed. And like the earlier models, the newest GENESIS grills are available for liquid propane or natural gas.
Not convinced yet? How about this: every Weber GENESIS grill comes with an upgraded sear zone, an expandable top cooking grate, an extra-large prep & serve table, an improved grease management system, high-performance burners, a 12-year limited warranty, and more upgrades. And that doesn’t even include the premium features found on our Special Edition Weber GENESIS grills, or the integrated Weber Connect smart technology on select models! Of course, newly designed Weber GENESIS models still feature the previous line’s calling cards of stainless steel Flavorizer bars, high-efficiency burners, convenient tool hooks, reliable quality, and top-notch customer support from the original grilling brand. But that’s where the comparisons end.
Weber Genesis II vs Weber GENESIS
Early in 2022, Weber discontinued their Genesis II line of gas grills and released the new GENESIS models. Improvements include:
- 35% more usable side shelf space and a taller hood than the Genesis II models to accommodate larger birds or cuts of meat with the accessory rotisserie. Also larger (and hotter!): the Sear Zone burner, which is standard.
- Compatibility with the new WEBER CRAFTED outdoor kitchen cookware accessories. This replaces the Gourmet BBQ System. Some models include storage for WEBER CRAFTED cookware.
- Special Edition models you won’t find in the big box stores, but are available on BBQGuys.com
- Much more, including redesigned handle lights that shine on the cooking surface, expanded warming racks, and cabinet doors for all models.
New Weber GENESIS Features
No worries if you scanned straight here; this is probably all the Kettleheads will be talking about as the new Weber GENESIS grills make the rounds. Here’s what you need to know: Weber incorporated tons of customer feedback while engineering the new GENESIS series, leading to major improvements virtually everywhere you look. So, let’s take a look at Weber GENESIS vs. Weber Genesis II in terms of new features, from the sleek aesthetic and overwhelming amount of added usable space to enhanced performance and everything in between.
The Largest & Hottest Weber Sear Zone Yet
More space, more BTUs, more satisfaction at the dinner table. That’s the approach new Weber GENESIS grills take to their sear zone, which has a dedicated sear burner that now matches the main burner BTUs (13,000 on 3-burner grill models; 12,000 on 4-burner models) instead of capping at 9,000 BTUs like Genesis II searing burners. Even better, the upgraded sear zone is featured on all Weber GENESIS grills, whereas only select Weber Genesis 2 models included the weaker searing burner. Why does it matter? Searing multiple steaks at once so everyone is feasting at the same time sounds like a pretty good reason to us.
Extra-Large Prep & Serve Table
To help you prepare, cook, and serve entire meals in your outdoor space, Weber extended the right side table on all GENESIS models to an 18” length and added a flush design. This change creates 35% more prep and serve space, with enough room for two cutting boards or serving trays at once! Not only are those cooking essentials kept within arm’s reach, but they also stay close to the sear zone (and Weber CRAFTED grillware; more on that below) for seamless transitioning from table to grill and back. It’s just another way that Weber helps you stay where the party is.
Expandable Top Cooking Rack
Where other grill manufacturers — and, it must be said, the Weber Genesis II line — are content to add a warming rack and call it a day, new Weber GENESIS grills go the extra mile (technically, inches, but you get the point) with a fold-out upper cooking rack. This secondary grilling surface increases the cooking surface by more than 50% when fully extended, offering over 100 more square inches than the Genesis II’s warming rack. Yes, it still folds in and tucks away when not in use, but with the added benefit of cooking entire meals to perfection on your GENESIS gas grill. A special recommendation from Weber: reverse-sear your steaks by slowly bringing them close to temp on the top cooking rack, then transfer them to the scorching sear zone to finish the job.
New & Improved Grease Management System
Cleanup isn’t fun, so Weber figured it might as well be easy. The upgraded grease management system helps you spend less time cleaning, plus it’s offset to the right of the cart enclosure to give you more storage space. This time around, the drip pan is attached to the pull-out grease tray in a more seamless design, and the grill comes with a plastic scraper for your dirty work. Just pull out the grease tray, scrape food remains into the drip pan, and remove it for easy disposal. It’s quick and mess-free, just the type of cleanup you need to spend more time enjoying company in the backyard.
Upgraded Caster Wheels
Weber reimagined everything for the new GENESIS grills, all the way down to the wheels. They’ve been upgraded to metal, rubber tread casters, as opposed to the pair of plastic locking casters on Genesis II grills. The rubber tread guarantees smooth transport, sturdier materials improve longevity, and the push-down lock mechanism lets you secure your grill in place with minimal effort.
Updated Control Panel: Cleaner Look, Better Precision
Looks aren’t everything, but they sure help. Newly designed Weber GENESIS grills sport a revamped control panel, starting with a slight angle for modern aesthetics and ease of use. The burner knobs follow suit, swapping the plastic construction from Weber Genesis II for metallicized knobs that lend a premium feel, not to mention greater durability. As a bonus, each control knob is notched with small-spaced tick marks for more precise flame control. That finally brings us to the T-bar handle, which is shaped for easy gripping, opening, and closing from any angle. And speaking of angles, the T-handle’s 90-degree corners enhance the modern look of Weber GENESIS gas grills.
Integrated Handle Lighting
Only a handful of Weber GENESIS grills — those with “P” in the model number — feature built-in lighting, but it’s a huge upgrade worth your attention. A pair of motion-activated LEDs rest inside the lid handle, turning off when the grill is shut to conserve battery and leaping to life once it’s opened to illuminate the grilling surface and prep & serve table. They’re powered by 3 C-cell batteries (included with lighted grills) and operate from a push-button ON/OFF switch cleverly placed on one end of the T-bar handle. Contrast this clean, integrated design with how lighted Weber Genesis II grills did things: a single bulky light, attached to the lid handle, that lit just the center cooking grates.
Taller, Bolder Grill Lid
No, we’re not done quite yet! Weber increased the height of these grill lids, a welcome change that goes beyond pure aesthetics. New GENESIS grills can fit rotisseries up to 10” in diameter without removing the top grate; at their lid height, older Weber Genesis II grills couldn’t accommodate rotisserie accessories without the warming rack being taken out. It seems like a small detail, but it’s just one more way the next generation of Weber GENESIS grills improve your outdoor cooking experience.
Longer Warranty
We’ll start by saying this: any Weber warranty, coupled with the company’s outstanding track record of customer service, brings major peace of mind for backyard grillers. That being said, Weber extended their limited warranty to 12 years on the new GENESIS grills, as opposed to a 10-year period for Genesis II. The concept is stunningly simple: remove the right-hand grill grate, replace it with the Weber CRAFTED Frame Kit if necessary, slot in your grillware of choice, and get cooking anything you can dream up. Eager to defy logic and steam crabs on a gas grill? We’ll take a moment to admire your courage before pointing you toward the wok and steamer accessory.
There are 7 pieces of Weber CRAFTED grillware in all; we left out the flat top griddle, dual-sided sear grate, roasting basket, and rotisserie skewers from the above hypotheticals (that you’ll soon be turning into reality). We like to think of it as having one accessory for every day of the week, so grilling in the backyard never gets boring. Be aware that the Weber CRAFTED line is sold separately, and certain Weber GENESIS models require you to purchase the frame kit as well. Here, we’ll save you some work — Weber GENESIS gas grills ending in “30” or “35” include the frame kit plus a storage locker that holds flat Weber CRAFTED grillware.
