love it

The only thing I think they should change, is putting the control system in another place, get too many drippings on it after some time, you can't see the temp unless its dark outside, other than that I love this smoker

The best smoker I've owned

Each year I make between 400-800 pounds of sausage before Christmas and I've had 10 other smokers over the years. Some lasted 1-2 at the most, others were expensive to operate adding to the cost of the sausage. Some just didn't work well. With my new Pitt Boss and the large pellet hopper I fill and walk away till morning, no more getting up 2-3 times at night. Holds temperature very well. I can hang 60 pounds of sausage at once.

Amazing - so far

Wife gave me a Pit Boss 77700 Copperhead 7 Series 29-inch Vertical Pellet Smoker w/ Window for Christmas. Took about an hour to assemble, did all of the pre-burn work and tested it out. Very simple to use. Put a 15# brisket on at 3:30 a.m the next morning. 15 hours later, the brisket was done to perfections Great smoker so far, will how it holds up as time goes on. Just remember to empty the pellet hopper after your done. I noticed when dumping the last of the bag, there was a significant amount of pellet dust. This will bridge up the feed auger if it builds up too much.

Anybody can be a BBQ/Smoker hero with this pellet smoker!

The Copperhead 7-series makes cooking bbq easy by maintaining your desired temp with delicious varieties of wood pellets available. I have used Pit Boss and Traeger pellets successfully. Large foil pans fit one per grid. Its easy and fun to use. Delivered by common carrier in good condition.

Its finicky

Owned for about a year. Pros: Great smoke & flavor control: Food coming off the smoker tastes great. I've used the competition blend, charcoal, apple, and pecan pellets. I've smoked butts, ribs, brisket, chicken, and turkey. Everything has tasted fantastic., after I found out how to use it reliably. Read on for more details. I have had many tell me its the best bbq they've ever had. I don't order ribs out anymore - they always disappoint. There are only a couple of places that I'll order pulled pork from. Once you learn how to manage temperature (see below) you're set. Easy to clean - this thing is really easy to clean. Each cook, after it cools I just use a shop vac to get the ash out. Every 4 or 5 smokes I use degreaser throughout. Door comes off very easily, spray it all down, let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes, wipe all the gunk off. Run it on high for 20 minutes to burn the gunk off and you're done. Huge capacity - I can get a ton of food on it - 8 butts, no problem. Cons Will cut off randomly even when there are plenty of pellets - I haven't 100% figured this out yet, but every now and then pellets will get impeded from the auger, even though there are plenty in there. Flame will go out and, unless you're keeping an eye on it, your f'd. I've noticed that it tends to do it less if you empty out the hopper each time and start each new cook from empty. Not sure why - I keep it covered so it is not getting damp/wet. Its odd - I feel like this just shouldn't happen. Internal Temperature probe is in accurate - Probe says its running 40 to 50 degrees hotter than it really is. For example if I set it to 300 the actual temperature will average 250 to 270. It took me several cooks, an oven thermometer and eventually a fancy probe unit and I'm good now, but it was very annoying at first.

Works great when it works!

I've had the 7 series for almost a year. I use it all the time to smoke pork butts, ribs, and brisket. I even make summer sausage and jerky in it. It does a fantastic job. However, I have to allow myself extra time to make sure its running properly. Just about every time I use it, there are issues. This smoker had several design flaws and has cheap internal components. Not worth the price. I would spend a few extra bucks and get a better brand

I wish it worked! Great Idea, bad execution

I have had my Pit Boss 7-series Copperhead smoke for several years not and have yet to complete a cook in it. I have had an open case with Pit Boss for over a year with not resolution to date. I have been promised parts that have never been delivered. I have orderd parts on my own based on what Pit Boss has identified as the problem, but I still have the same issue of ErH. I have followed the advise of everyone I could find. Still ErH every time. I love the idea of a vertical smoker and I am ver jelious of those that have ones that work. I refuse to spend another 5-7 hundred dollers on something that may not work like this one has. I refuse to give up and now researching how the newer models control fire and will start modding this one soon using sheetmetal that I have in my shop. For now, I will continue to use my off-set smoker. Very disappointed.

Expensive Paperweight!!

I bought my husband the 7 series smoker for Christmas. He used it once and it worked brilliantly. He followed all directions on post use care and cleanup. He tried to use it the second time. It started up okay, but when pre-heating, it stoped and displayed the ErH error code. During the pre-heating cycle, the temperature fluctuated wildly, rapidly jumping as much as 100-150 degrees, then down, then up constantly until it finally errors out. He cooled the unit, completely cleaned it out AGAIN with the Shop Vac, but on start up he got the same results. He has tried to contact Pit Boss Customer Service but no one has responded aside for the automatic email "Thank you for your response". I've tried to contact them as well and got the same response. This product is not worth the it, either in money or time!!! We now have a very expensive paper weight!!! DO NOT BOTHER!!! Obviously, they are happy to take your money but not respond to any customer service inquiries.

The Skinny:

  • Temperature range between 150–450 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Large-capacity hopper for extended cooks
  • Large window to monitor food
  • Designed with sturdy materials

Things We Love

Temperature-control Features

You can’t have low-and-slow cooking without consistently low temperatures. That’s why the guys at Pit Boss designed their Copperhead Series pellet smokers with easy-to-use controls that let you pinpoint exact heat levels within the 150–450-degree temperature range. When you’ve got guests to entertain or food to prepare, there’s nothing better than the 10 temperature presets and startup and cooldown cycles found on the Copperhead smokers.

It’s when you’re cooking, though, that these features really shine. Several components of these Pit Boss smokers — the external heat indicator, included meat probe with digital LED readouts, and large viewing window — allow you to stay informed without opening the door and letting precious heat or smoke escape (the sturdy door latch deserves some praise, too). If you need to open the door to show off the goods or just want an extra boost of flavorful smoke, there’s also a prime function that burns a new batch of pellets with a 300-watt ignitor and fan-forced draft.

Durable & Efficient Design

At this point, you might be wondering why Pit Boss calls these smokers Copperheads. It has nothing to do with snakes (no judgement if smoked snake is on the menu at your next cookout) — instead, the name comes from the beautiful hammertone copper finish of these pellet cookers. Underneath that attractive finish is a cold-rolled, double-walled steel body with high-heat coating, giving Copperhead Series smokers the durability for years of cooking.

But Pit Boss also values an efficient smoking experience, so Copperhead models come with a slide-out grease tray and ash pan for simple cleanup. Moving the smoker around is even easier thanks to two front swivel caster wheels and two more in the rear that can lock into place. For those who’d like to give water-smoking a try, the included water pan can be filled with marinades or other liquids to provide extra flavor and moisture. Trust us, you’ll want to give it a try.

Large-capacity Hopper

Did we mention these pellet smokers can cook a whole bunch of food? The two Copperhead Series models have different pellet capacities and cooking areas, but the smaller 3 Series edition shouldn’t be overlooked. With the Pit Boss Copperhead 3 Series, you get 800 square inches of cooking space across four adjustable racks and a hopper that can hold up to 35 pounds and smoke for 18 hours. The Pit Boss Copperhead 7 Series, meanwhile, boasts 2,059 square inches of cooking area, six porcelain-coated racks, a 60-pound hopper, and a smoke time of up to 24 hours!

No matter which model you choose, the hopper has a side window to check fuel levels, a hinge door for quick refills, and a clean-out door to empty the pellets or change flavors. Just keep in mind that the Copperhead Series works best with Pit Boss pellets.

Things to Consider

If your goal is to smoke at low temperatures for an extended period of time without refilling your fuel, the Pit Boss Copperhead Series is a great option for you. But we know you may have more questions about these smokers, which is why our BBQ experts are standing by at 1-877-743-2269 to help you make the right decision.

Are the legs removable? I want to build it into my outdoor kitchen.

Hey Laila! This particular smoker was designed with portability in mind. The legs act as a support for the control panel and provide space underneath the smoker for the grease trap. We recommend following the manufacturer's assembly instructions.

When will my item arrive?

Once shipped, items usually arrive within 3-5 business days. While UPS and FedEx are our carriers for smaller items, be aware that larger items and orders are shipped via freight. The freight process is a bit more complicated than what we’ve all come to expect for small parcels, so it’s important that you’re prepared and understand what’s required of you well before delivery day.

  • Most freight products ship on a pallet
  • Some carriers will call to schedule a delivery window, while others will deliver the shipment to a reasonably accessible location closest to your residence (their goal is to deliver as near a garage door as they can).
  • We’ll specify which process you can expect in your shipping confirmation email.

For carriers that schedule delivery appointments:

Carriers that schedule delivery appointments require you to be home for delivery and provide your signature. The delivery is made with a semi-truck with lift gate services, and the shipment is dropped off at the curb. If you authorize the shipping company to leave the delivery without a signature, BBQGuys can’t be held responsible for damages that occur during delivery. As complicated as this process may seem, we’ve only scratched the surface here — please review our detailed guide to freight delivery so there are no surprises when a freight shipment heads your way.

For carriers that deliver without an appointment:

Carriers that deliver without an appointment don’t require you to be home or set up a delivery window, and you aren’t required to sign for the pallet(s). Instead of scheduling an appointment, arranging your schedule to be home for the delivery, and signing to confirm receipt, you can sit back and let your items come to you. If you’re home at the time of the drop-off, you can request the driver place your delivery in the garage; if you’re out of the house, the driver will leave it near the garage or doorstep.
